HP Lovecraft’s Beyond The Wall of Sleep – 2006

You might think that I won’t like this movie, since it has so many jump cuts and shakeycam shots. And normally I do indeed hate them. But this one, since it’s only used when we are experiencing what the insane see, then it actually ADDS to the atmosphere.

And that’s what this movie has in spades, atmosphere. This is a very well done adaption of a HP Lovecraft story. Interestingly, this movie has very little in it from the story. However, the SPIRIT of this movie FEELS like a Lovecraft story (unlike many others, where it just seemed like a horror movie). The fact that it takes place in the past (as all of Lovecraft’s stories do), in a disgusting asylum, helps a bunch. The fact that most of the actors are stage actors (instead of friends of the director) helps too. It even has a cameo by Tom Savini.

Shot on 35mm, in 15 days (according to the commentary) is pretty impressive too. This isn’t some shot on DVD direct to video release. This movie is pretty much the polar opposite of yesterday’s Demons At The Door.

Four beers out of five. Excellent little flick.
