One Missed Call – 2003
Another in my continuing quest to see all the Japanese horror movies BEFORE they are turned into American trash. I liked the original Grudge, and The Ring, but this one is BORING
and PREDICTABLE
and TOO DAMN DARK!
And then it’s the end. And my only thought was “Wait! What? Who? WTF?”
Terrible. In a word, terrible. And no nudity. Only the corny dialogue saves it from being a one. Oh, and with foreign films, there’s always the joy of spotting the mistakes in the dubbing/subtitles. That’s about all the fun you’ll have watching this turkey. And counting down the seconds until the next thing that you know ahead of time will happen. I’m serious, its that predictable.
No extras or commentary. Leave this one alone. Only the most masochistic need apply.

They Live – 1988
I’ve always liked this flick. I remember seeing it at a theater when it came out, and really enjoying it. John Carpenter didn’t begin to loose his touch until the late 90’s. Everything else is all good.
The staticy, intermittent TV transmission is the same gag used in Carpenter’s previous movie Prince of Darkness. Its creepy, and I like it.
This movie is kinda slow to build, but it pays off well. And the fight scene that I remember so fondly isn’t as long as I thought. Its only 5 minutes long. I would have sworn it was closer to 10.
There’s some really great blood and squibwork here, especially for ’88.
Subtitles, but no other extras whatsoever. So I’m glad I got this one on the cheap from DeepDiscountDVD.

Thanx for the interesting historical background. Its that kind of thing that makes this all interesting, I think.
BTW, just out of idle curiousity, how do you play Region 2 stuff? On a PC, do you have a all-region player (and if so, which one?), or are you actually in Region 2?
thanx
