Equilibrium - 2002 [Warning: This entry contains political comments]

This movie gets terrible reviews, and to be honest, I think its underserved. I really liked it, and not in a "I love bad movies" kinda way. I like the idea of WWIII having scared the world so much, they are willing to drug themselves to remove emotions to ensure that it never happens again. In the commentary, the directory denies that this is an allegory for our modern giving up of rights for "security". I think that's bunk, it seems far too obvious to be an accident. It screamed out of the movie to me, but then again, maybe I'm too sensitive, since I feel so betrayed by the Republican party in general and the GWB in particular. But enough of my political ranting. You wanna know about the movie, not what so neo-libertarian from Texas thinks.

The whole idea of a martial art passed on two pistols (Gun Kata) is pretty hip. A little perposterous, but cool in that Hong Kong cinema sort of way. And the realization of it on the screen is very well done, and looks great. Its also fun to see Christian Bale get all kungfu physical, in a role that undoubtedly helped him land Batman in Batman Begins.

Anywho, the movie is clear, bright, and clean. Good audio, with subtitles. The plot moves along nicely with action scenes to keep your interest. The ending is pretty predictable, but still, overall, I really liked this movie. I think that it has gotten a bad rap, and deserves a second look by B-Movie and SciFi fans alike.

Four out of Five beers, or take a shot every time Christian Bale strikes a pose
