The Golden Compass - 2007

Wow, look at this cast. Nicole Kidman (playing a bitch, how perfect!), Ian McKellen, Sam Elliott, Christopher Lee! Man, no wonder this puppy cost $180M! And it's pretty cool. Now, I suspect that one of the reasons that I enjoyed it was that I had NOT read the books. In fact, I bought them for my son, and I should ask him if his opinion of the movie changed after reading them. But I think I know understand how folks who never read Tolkien felt while watching LOTRs. You spend a lot of time wondering who the hell are these people?

Puppet & Demons - 1997

Not since Nick Zedd have I seen such utter incompetence. Patrick McGuinn is yet another talentless guy that makes movies, evidently solely for his own amusement. And ours, if you love crap. This guy has now entered that stratified group are actually worse than Ed Wood.

And here is one of those places where web-based tools like IMDB and Wikipedia are less than helpful. IMDB says these are award winning. However, I notice that under "Awards" none are listed. You can bet that Patrick McGuinn wrote that "award winning" description. The only award this would win would be if it was entered into a grade school competition.

This is pure pain. Only the strongest bad movie fan could tolerate more than a couple minutes of this tripe.

The Grindhouse Experience, Vol. 2
Stryker - 1983 Philippines

Looks Italian, but IMDB says Philippian. Better than the usual post-apocalyptic warrior flick. If you like the silly cars, the wars over gas, the hunt for water, etc. then this one will satisfy you for a couple hours.

The Atlantis Interceptors - 1983 aka Atlantis Inferno

And you know this one will be classic, it's directed by Ruggero Deodato, the man who gave us Cannibal Holocaust. That means this is gonna be classic Italian grindhouse. Cheap, cheezy, and maybe, if we're lucky, trashy.

Basically, post apocalyptic without the apocalypse. Atlantis rises and attacks with decorated cars and motorcycles. Goofy Italian fun.

Carthage in Flames - 1960 Italian

Ahhhh, sword and sandals. Normally they are pretty enjoyable. But sweet Buddha, this was unfollowable and dull! Skip!

Coriolanus - 1964 aka Hero Without a Country

You know you're a company that doesn't care about details when you put out a disc where the VHS tape you are making your master from losses sync and the screen is unviewable for over a minute. Is there a prescreen that says that elements aren't up to snuff? Hell, no. First Look Home Entertainment should be ashamed.

But, once we get the video problems resolved, it's better than Carthage in Flames. At least I can tell the good guys from the bad guys.

Mardi Gras Massacre - 1978

Yippee! A video nasty! This is more like it. 70's gore. Pity I had to get ahold of a VHS transfer to see it. Oh well, sooner or later someone will release it. And disco music. Whee!!!!!

Boxer's Omen - 1983

Shaw Brothers Kung Fu greatness! And once again, the Shaw Brothers are stealing music. This time, it's music and stings from "Alien". And even the "Boy!" tag from Phantasm! Great stuff!

42nd Street Forever, XXXtreme Special Edition

Hardcore trailers from the 80's. Yeah, you gotta be over 18 to buy and watch this puppy. And let me tell you, porn was GREAT back in the 80's. The women looked like folks you might actually meet. I wrote down 30 movies I'd like to get. (which is, of course, the purpose of these trailer compilations).

Man, the girl from "The Dirty Mind of Young Sally", Colleen Brennan (sometimes going by Sharon Kelly) did a LOT of harcore porn. So this was great!

Something Weird Video
Street Corner - 1948

Standard "sex is bad" film from the 40's. A road show movie. And three, count 'em three commentaries. Commentary #1 has David F. Friedman!!! I thought I had seen all the SWV's where he did commentaries, so this was a super happy blast from the past. Hey Michael, pick this one up asap! Joining David were Frank Henenlotter (of Basketcase fame) and Mike Varney (head of SWV). Fun, fun, fun.

Commentary #2 has Dan Sonney(one of the Forty Thieve) and Varney. Fascinating history of exploitation. But it never ends!

Commentary #3 has a Roadshow Impressio (I missed the name), who worked for Bab Kroger. He worked on Prince of Peace and sold a about the making of the movie. Unfortunately, he's old and confuses himself occasionally.

Because of Eve - 1948

Hilarious! So, let me get this straight. So, one guy causes his buddy to get VD, knocks up a girl, but dies in WWII, saving the buddy he arranged to give VD to. The buddy then returns home, falls in love with the ex-fiance, once knocked up broad of the dead VD giver. And neither realize it until their doctor, who may have the worst bedside manner since Dr. Mengela, makes them talk to one another. Thus giving him an excuse to show them movies about VD, pregnancy, and childbirth. Yeah, okay. That's not contrived.

Yes, Street Corner was great. I did get this not to long ago. When I watch this and especially listen to the commentaries I wish they would do more with Dave Friedman and HGL as well. These guys are the last ones out there and getting up in age so we don't have to much longer to pick their brains for all the cool stories.

PS As you know Image no longer puts out the SMV special editions but I am almost up on getting them all actually.

I love the Ban1 and other Trailer DVDs from Synapse. Like you I was writing down the titles but I think some of them might not even be in print. Some I saw as downloads on Pirate Bay but they are really poor copies from VHS I think.

Ken, do you have the one called Smut Palace Insanity. Nothing but late 70/80s porn which is really funny.

Also, I also ordered some movies from Alpha blus which is Hardgore and the other one I think called something like Blue Climax directed by Lee Frost who directed most of the other exploitation films in the 60s but lending his talents to hard core porn. If you need copies let me know.

I have Hardgore (which I think I got from UseNeXt), but I would definitely like to see Blue Climax. Any Lee Frost is okay by me. Gotta love that old, original porn by the sexploitation guys. I'm really looking to get my hands on any that has Colleen Brennan in it.
