The Orb - 2005

Why, don't see many independent movies that are shot in Hawaii. Very nice. And it's nice that I only hate HALF the folks in this movie, instead of all of them. Alas, anyone who doesn't see the ending coming doesn't watch very many horror movies. Not much new here, except the Orb (a sort of energy globe) transferring the rage, instead of the usual infection.

Commentary features the director Scott Lee Mason and producer/writer Dustin Cross. Some background, some tech. Twelve day shoot. This commentary starts to get irritating after awhile, every other scene is "oh, this is my favorite scene". After the (I counted) 12th time, I bailed on the commentary. But there's a one hour long making of to make up. Why would you make a making of that 2/3 the length of the movie?

Jericho, Season 1 - 2006

This is a very enjoyable series, but don't expect a lot of originality. This is basically a post-apocalypse Lost. Lots of character sub-plots. Lots of personal mysteries to reveal over time. And it's an interesting view of "after the bomb". First off, it's timely, as it's terrorists. And I'm not spoiling anything when I say that it could be that the terrorists are locals. A timely idea. I do like how they portray the conditions. May be the most accurate I've ever seen. The only unrealistic aspect is the lack of radiation. Oh, and the EMP. There never is explained why there's a EMP all that time later, and then why are there modern cars and trucks working in later episodes?

It's nice to see Major Dad Gerald McRaney in a good role. But this would have been a lot better on HBO or Showtime. A little nudity, a little less predictability due to a slightly higher caliber of writer, and this would have been great instead of merely good.

Other extras include 1 deleted scene, and a good behind the scenes featurette. It's hard to image that this is a set built on a backlot in 8 weeks. Amazing what plenty of money can buy.

Anywho, this is definitely a renter. If you are looking for something TV-like to watch while we recover from the writers' strike, you could do worse than this.

Jericho was a fun series. A different take on the end of the world senerio. I really enjoyed the way the producers tried to show the problems that would come up via this situation.

Have to agree, I enjoyed Jericho when it was first run. There are a few stretches of the imagination like Dirkmaster says, but all in all, enjoyable.
