We take a break from our regularly scheduled Val Lewton to return to more “normal” fare, while we await the arrival of the last disc.

Prison-A-Go-Go! – 2003

This is the best WIP (Women in Prison, for those of you who haven’t discovered the joy at is this genre) satire/comedy I have ever see. Of course, it’s the ONLY WIP satire I have ever seen. Still, it is laugh out loud funny. Perhaps, however, there would less enjoyment if you haven’t seen 10 Violent Women or Women’s Prison Massacre.

Here are some highlights
  1. Mary Woronov (Calamity Jane from Deathrace 2000) as Dyanne She-Bitch Slutface! Its nice to see that Exploitation is alive and well (hiring someone “famous” to put their name on the poster)

  2. Countdown clock to the next requisite Shower Scene

  3. Zombies in a Cage! (eating everyone whoever goes in)

  4. Ninja!

No subtitles, but there is a commentary with cast and crew.  Here we learn that this was shot on 35mm VERY short ends (the longest roll allowed a 3 minute take). They spent only $5K on film, which is pretty amazing. Very frugal, but that must have made shooting difficult. Shot in 10 days, which is really speedy for a film movie. But then, with so little film, guess you don’t do too many takes.

There are a ton of other extras on here as well.
  1. An interview with the director

  2. Behind the scenes (which is much shorter than it should have been. Something about the documentarian who they gave all the behind the scenes footage ending up in prison for some kind of sexual assault charge.

  3. Deleted scenes

  4. Audition scenes

  5. At the Shock a Go-Go convention, with Roger Corman, Mary Woronov, and David Friedman

  6. A Q&A session for those above. I only watched the Dave Friedman one, as I LOVE this man (“The Mighty Monarch of Exploitation”). Great stuff, and almost worth the cost of the disc in and of itself.

Four beers out of five. (If the shower scenes had been different, with nicer girls, it might have made a five!)
