Raw Meat - 1972

Boy, was I worried when I popped in this disc. I always watch the trailer for the movie before watching the movie, and the trailer for this movie looked TERRIBLE! Scratched and faded, I was very worried that the movie would be sub-par as well. Happily, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the movie was pristine.

This movie was surprisingly good. And it contained more Christopher Lee goodness. Unfortunately, it’s only for about 5 minutes. But he does play a creepy asshole from M-5. But Donald Pleasence is in it all the way, and is GREAT! Who would have thought that he had such comedic timing? He is VERY funny here. I loved his role as an alcoholic detective. There actually is some depth, and warmth to his character. Not too surprising, considering this is a British flick. And the bad guy is a very tragic character. It is very well done.

I do have one question. There are several scenes that are fairly gory. How did this movie miss being a Video Nasty? Are we dealing with some kind of prejudice? This is, after all, a British movie. Were British movies given a pass in the Video Nasty list? I will have to look into that. If you know anything about this, plz comment.

Women of the World – 1963

From the director who gave us Mondo Cane, Africa Addio and Goodbye Uncle Tom (see Feb 7 & 8 entries) comes an early Mondo about the roles of women the world over. I suppose that in 1963, this was considered shocking. “I tell you Myrtle, I was shock! Shocked I tell you. And so much nudity. I have NEVER seen so many bosoms in all my born days”.

Well, by today’s standards, it’s dull, dull, dull. Its not a very good Mondo (I liked Africa Addio much more, and Mondo Cane best of all), and its not a very good film. And it certainly fails as a Nudie Cutie. So not much here to recommend it. I’m kinda disappointed, after liking his other work so much. Well, I guess I should have believed the “Godfathers of Mondo” disc. It said that this was a weak entry.
