Broken Lizard’s Club Dread (2004)

Not my usual fare, I know. This is another one that I don’t remember why I added it to my list. I don’t usually do Comedy/Horror hybrids. And this movie reminded me why. It’s neither.

Oh, I smiled at several jokes, even getting a couple that writers proudly point out in the commentary as “their favorites that no one ever notices”. Still, there were no outright laughs, and I think you usually shoot for more than knowing smiles in most comedies. Also, the horror was supposed to be supported by this whole “slasher is killing the staff” plot, but it was just kinda lame. I think the funny stuff just takes too much tension out of a movie, so you can never really be scared. Oh sure, some of the deaths were clever, and a few were fairly bloody, but there’s nothing here you haven’t see a hundred times (if you’re like me, that is).

It did have the saving grace of lots of nice nubile bodies on display, which gets it a star all by itself. And subtitles and 2, count ‘em two commentaries (although the director’s was so dull I gave up, and started over with the producer and the writers, which was MUCH better). Transfer, color and audio are all perfect, but then you’d expect nothing less from a movie make just over 18 months ago.

Three out of five beers (saved by the boobies!)
