Brothers of the Head – 2005

UK mockumentary about exploitation. Siamese twins, exploited into a punk band, ends (predictably enough) tragically. Happily, it has subtitles, as much of it is mumbling. The other half is screaming (punk music, remember?).

Extras include deleted and extended scenes.

This was not nearly as entertaining as I hoped. In fact, it was fairly depressing. Not what I was expecting.

Witchery – 1988

Featuring David Hasselhoff (Knight Rider) and Linda Blair (Exorcist) and written by Joe D’ Amato. This Italian horror movie also sounded great on Netflix, and didn’t work out that way.

You know what makes Italian horror movies great? (I can hear some of you shouting “NOT A DAMN THING” and I understand). I say boobage and gore. Unfortunately, throughout the first hour, there was plenty of chances, but no such luck. Finally, one hour and 10 minutes in, we get a little of both. But it’s too little too late to save this snoozer.

The Irrefutable Truth About Demons – 2000

This commercial disc from New Zealand is a huge pain in the ass. Why can’t I change between audio tracks. And it’s a pretty good flick. A pretty good mind “F”.

Ahh, here’s why you cannot change to the audio commentary. It’s not so much a commentary as it is an audio interview that only lasts about 3 minutes. The actor’s commentary is the same thing. It’s not a commentary of the movie, but a commentary about the making of the movie as an audio interview.

The 8th Plague – 2006

First effort by writer/director Franklin Guerrero Jr. A girl and her two friends (whom I hated) go into an abandoned prison looking for her sister.

One hour in, and we have a scene that is gory enough to pay for the whole thing. Alas, the ending is hideously predictable. I told my wife what was going to happen WAY before it did. And the only extras are a Making of featurette and deleted scenes. This is not bad for a first effort, but overall, fairly disappointing.

Basket Case – 1982

This is a classic 80’s horror/slasher freak movie. I love this flick. The foley work is the best. Alas, there are no subtitles, but there is an excellent Commentary.

$33,000 to make over many months. Shot on 16mm, and Frank Henenlotter says that the SWV DVD looks better than the theatrical print.. The commentary features directory Frank Henenlotter, producer Edgar Levins, and actress Beverly Banner (Casey). And the best part of the commentary?

Beverly: “It was one of the best experiences of my life!”
Frank H: “Well, that’s just sad”

Other extras include Outtakes and deleted scenes, Behind the scenes photo gallery, and radio interviews & Spots.

Slayer – 2006 TV Movie

You know, I’m gonna start campaigning that Netflix note when a movie is actually a “Made for TV” movie, especially when it’s made by the SciFi Channel. These things usually suck.

Hey, isn’t that Lynda Carter? And there’s Danny Trejo, everybody’s favorite. And Casper van Dien (Hawk) from Starship Troopers. Kevin VanHook (director) was also the writer/director of Voodoo Moon (enjoyed earlier in the month).

Only extra is a commentary by Kevin and Casper. Pretty good, fairly informative.

Actually, its not as dumb as most SciFi Channel Movies. Not great, but not awful either.

Escape From Hell – 1980

OMG, this is a direct video dup off a VHS tape from Wizard Video. What a rip off! And it looks like a VHS dup as well. Like an Italian movie needs that help at looking like crap.

Ahh, it’s Ajita Wilson, our favorite transgendered actress. She was in Sadomania, Hell Penetentary, and the last week’s Macumba Sexual.

Directed by Edward G Muller, who seems to have specialized in WIP movies. So lets see how he does in this one meeting all the requirements by doing a WIP Roll Call:
  1. Shower scene – check

  2. Lez scene – check

  3. Girls with guns – nope

  4. Cat fight – check

  5. Torture – check

  6. Rape by guards – (although that’s a lot of foreplay for rape) check
Well, 5 out of 6 is plenty good.

Lust For Freedom – 1987

Ack, oop! <-Bill the cat imitation
This one really sucked. The Director (Eric Louzil) would go on to make Class of Nuke ‘em High II & III. Sure couldn’t tell it by this turkey. There’s a ton of voice over right out  from the start. That’s always a bad sign.

Hey, a blanket party! They ought to do everyone in this thing, since not a single one of them can act. And if the terrible acting isn’t bad enough, this 80’s big hair rock is about to make me yak!

Drive In Double Feature from Dark Sky
Blood of the Vampire – 1958

This film from the UK looks like a Hammer, plays like a Hammer, but it’s not. It’s a solid Gothic horror flick, with just enough blood to not be silly, but not gross. And it has beautiful sets.

The commentary has Marcus Hurn, producer Baker and writer Jimmy Sangster. It’s very historical. More a history Hammer and their careers. Only interesting movie fact was that it only had a 25 day shoot. Looking at this, that is simply amazing. It looks like a much bigger, longer shoot.

The Hellfire Club – 1961

Written by same guy (Sangster) and directed by same Robert Baker as produced previous. And it has Peter Cushing in a nice little role.

This was a fun little costumer, not really a horror movie at all.
