A few weeks ago, I talked about the sequel to this movie. Now, I get to see the original, the big dog of the Women in Prison set. And it does Jack Hill, the director proud. But what’s really amazing about this flick is the money. It cost $125K, and grossed $10M in the US alone. Not a bad investment.
But let’s see if this movie has all the required, WIP conventions:
- Pam Grier – check
- Shower scene – check
- Sig Haig – check
- Cat fight – check
- Hose off the women - check
- Mud Fight – check
- Big gun fight at the end – check
And a food fight. Gotta love that.
There’s no subtitles, but there is a commentary track by Jack Hill himself. Lots of interesting stuff here, like he didn’t like the original script, but was so desperate for work, he took it anyway. And how he was grateful for the slow pace of shooting in the Philippines, since that gave him time to rewrite the script. This commentary track is one of those solo efforts that DOESN’T suck.
Favorite line in the movie? “It’s stiff. Pull it.” It’s not what you think, but it’s good nonetheless. And according to the commentary, it became a favorite line among cast and crew.
Four beers out of five. It’s just about everything you’d want an exploitation movie to be.
