UltraChrist! – 1993
Well, if you have any religious feelings whatsoever, you better stop reading this right now. This movie is a comedy. But it pokes fun at just about every sacred cow in existence. But this isn’t a Dogma, with a sense of respect for the religion that it is pointing fun at. Oh no, this is an irreverent, wacky, almost Monty Phytonish film. Christ comes back to earth, but to get people to relate to him, he dons a spandex costume and becomes a superhero, UltraChrist! While living with a pair of lipstick lesbians. Yep.
It is kinda funny in places, and the actors are better than you’d expect for a Ultra-low budget comedy. And it’s not terribly long. Pity there’s no nudity. That would have helped. But the director didn’t want anything too “off color” (a scene that features the two lesbians having a panty fight has them both fully clothed), so you can see that he’s kinda a prude when it comes to sex. Which is funny in and of itself, as the “lesson” of the movie is that Jesus realizes that sex outside of marriage isn’t a bad thing, and so makes it not a sin anymore. Yep.
There’s no subs, but there is the aforementioned commentary by the Director and the writer, who is also one of the main characters. And a behind the scenes with most of the main characters getting drunk. Yep.
Two beers out of five. A little nudity would have made this a fun little flick.
