Weekend Dec 17-18 2005

Well, thanx to throttling with Netflix (and I'm on the 5 disc plan, but I guess always returning the very next day is too fast for them), I'm having to watch stuff I've bought and set back for a rainy day. Last time I had this problem, I watched Lost in Space, Season One. Well, its time to watch Lost in Space, Season Two Part 1.

First off, you can see that Irwin Allen decided that the campy aspects of the show was what people liked about it, because they crank it up about three notched between Season One and Two. Also, the addition of color almost makes it more "cartoony", as their costumes are really hideous colors. They are so bright, that I'm amazed they don't have to wear shades. Also, color only makes the cheesy special effects even more obviously fake.

You have to give the writers credit, if they want you to hate Dr. Smith, they do a GREAT job. If you can watch these episodes without SCREAMING to space Smith, you're a better man or woman than I (but then, I'm an evil bastard, so maybe that's not that hard). You will loathe him. Jonathan Harris is a great actor, because like those actors who play gay characters, I couldn't do it. A purely evil guy, like Darth Vader or some Bond Villian, no problem. But a wormy, slimy, cowardly villian like Dr. Smith, I just couldn't do it. I'd kill myself first.

As far as the disc's themselves are concerned, the images are bright and clear, the audio is clean (with excellent subtitles, YEAH!). There hasn't been a single extra on the first three of four discs, however. I'll finish disc four tonight, so maybe there's something there.

And now, for a brief rant. Does anyone besides myself think these things are a little overpriced. I mean, its not like they are paying residuals to the actors or Irwin Allen for them. Let's see: SRP for this set is $39.98. There are 4 discs, with 4 50 minute episodes apiece on them. So thats roughly 800 minutes of TV, or just a hair under $0.05 a minute for Lost in Space, Season Two Part One. Compare that to another 20th Century Fox release: Buffy the Vampire Slayer - The Complete Sixth Season. SRP of $59.98. But there are 21 50 minute episodes on 6 discs, plus extras. Now I realize that at first glance, this hurts my argument. That's almost $0.06 a minute, but the difference is the COST to 20thCF. you know that Fox is making a LOT less on on Buffy, because they are paying the modern actors for each DVD release. I just think that considering what 20th Century Fox spent to bring them out, and how few (if any) extras there on this set, the could have made it so that the entire season could have cost $60, instead of the $80 it set me back.
