Well, I've been meaning to start blogging my reactions to the terrible movies I watch each night (does it make me a maschocist if I like watching bad movies?). So here I go. Details about me and my life will be sprinkled in as I go.
The Candy Snatchers - 1973 - Dir. Guerdon Trueblood
From a purely presentation point, this DVD is gorgeous. Colors bright, transfer sharp and clean, audio crisp. You can only tell that the movie is 30 years old by the cars and the clothes.
Oh, and the god-awful plot. Three brain-damaged criminals need to get some cash, and they refuse to "work for the man" (god, don't you miss the 70's?) so they kidnap a girl who's Dad works at a jewelry store. They bury her under only about 2 inches of sand, and call the Dad to demand the ransom. Unfortunately, things just don't go as they plan. And it all spirals down to the most depressing and ambiguous ending in recent memory. Wonderful exploitation trash!
The commentary is kinda funny, as the two lead girls commerserate on how terrible the conditions were during the filming. Susan Sennett truly suffered for her art.
Subversive Cinema, Inc. has done a great job on this DVD, and the movie is a perfect slice of Exploitation history. I mean, you can't use child actors who obviously have special needs like this anymore. Its really downright disturbing. I give it 4 out of 5 beer bottles.
